You will probably all recall when the late “Rocky” Wallace started a fund raising campaign to send Joanne Carrol and her partner, Darrell to Terendak Camp in Malacca, Malaysia to visit her father, Sgt Ron Carroll’s grave. Since then a petitition was raised to “return the 24 soldiers, including Ron, buried in Terendak Camp and 1 soldier in Kranji War Cemetery in Singapore to their families in Australia”, which I forwarded to you all to support and many of you did.
As I’m sure you are all aware the petition was successful and the Govt relented and the remains will be returned to the families. I have been in contact with Joanne since the announcement and today Beth and I visited her and Darrell as part of our travels in WA..
They, and her younger brother, Peter are extremely grateful to you all and the people you passed the petition onto for signing. I last heard that over 60,000 people signed the petition.
Many legalities are still to be attended to but she has had contact with RSL, WA, (Including former MP and Veteran, Graham Edwards), DVA, War Graves Commission and other official agencies. It is thought that the remains may be repetriated by June, 2016. Joanne is over the moon and hopes he is re-interred in Karrakatta’s War Cemetery in Perth.
Attached is a newspaper article in today’s “The West Australian” where Joanne and Peter are interviewed.
Thank you for your support in the petition.
Dutchy and Beth
